Wellington Manager & Coastguard Skipper

In this Photo Feature we profile our Wellington Manager, Lindsay Ross ANZIIF (Snr Assoc), CIP.

As well as being a respected marine underwriter from Vero Marine, assessing cargo and hull risks, Lindsay contributes to the community through his volunteer work in the Royal New Zealand Coastguard. Vero Marine provides sponsorship in terms of time and other support for Lindsay and others who serve their community. "I'm grateful for this," says Lindsay, "because it allows me to assist my local marine community in my role as a coast guard volunteer. It also adds to my knowledge as a marine underwriter."

The Royal New Zealand Coastguard provides New Zealand's primary maritime Search and Rescue service. It operates from a network of 65 affiliated units strategically located around the coastline and major lakes of New Zealand.

The Coastguard is a volunteer organization, with charitable status. It is a self funded and operates on contributions from sponsorship, fundraising and the network of community and gaming trusts around New Zealand. The Coastguard membership comprises of approximately 2,500 dedicated active volunteers, with some 12,000 supporter members. There are some 75 dedicated rescue vessels in the Coastguard fleet. In addition to these, the Coastguard still uses a number of privately owned rescue vessels in some parts of the country.

Every year the Coastguard network of radio operators answer hundreds of thousands of calls for help or assistance and, on average, over 5,000 people a year are assisted. The work performed by the Coastguard has resulted in a number of lives saved, and millions of dollars worth of boats and equipment salvaged.

Never far from the ocean, Lindsay has a dual role as Operations Manager and Skipper.

First, he holds overall responsibility for the operations of the Mana Volunteer Coastguard Unit, including search and rescue (SAR). He has responsibility for crew recruitment, training and rostering; the maintenance of the vessels; and liaison with NZ Police and the NZ Maritime Safety Authority. As Skipper, he and his crew train for emergencies at all hours on the waters of Cook Strait.

Lindsay is rostered on call for call-outs that fall into three categories:
  • 'Good Samaritan' Acts where other boaties or members of the Public alert the Coastguard to a problem or ask the Coastguard to assist;
  • 'Class II' SAR operations where the Coastguard assist the Police in any incident; and
  • 'Class III" where their directions come from the National Search & Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Avalon

Lindsay also has an ongoing responsibility to advise people on boating safety.
