Hull claims procedure

What to do in case of Loss of Accident to your Vessel:

You must
advise Vero Marine immediately of the circumstances of your loss.

We will endeavour to give you assistance and may require a surveyor to help you with your claim. The surveyor does not take control; you remain responsible for the safety of your property and any loss or damage to other property. Surveyors usually have an expertise in maritime casualties and you are
encouraged to listen to their advice.

  • You must act as if you had no insurance and you are facing a large financial loss.
  • You should take all steps to minimise the loss or damage, or any potential legal liability. You must act to safeguard the property insured.
  • You should gather evidence (such as photographs, video, print-outs from your vessel's electronic equipment), names of witnesses, draw diagrams and annotate marine charts.
  • In the case of theft, vandalism or other criminal activity, you must inform the police.
  • You must send to us any communication received from any other person concerning the claim or damage.

You should not, without our written consent:
  • Incur any expense in making good any loss or damage (other than to prevent further damage).
  • Negotiate, pay, settle, admit or repudiate any claim to a third party. For any circumstances that could give to a claim against you under the third party legal liability (P&I) section of your insurance policy, you should follow the liability claims procedure.

You should also inform the Maritime New Zealand of the circumstances of your accident.
