"Helmsman" is a hull insurance policy specifically designed for skippered charter and small tourist boat operators.

The policy wording is in a plain English style and provides cover for:

• Sudden and unforeseen accidental direct physical loss or damage to the vessel's hull, machinery and equipment whilst afloat, ashore or whilst being transported on land.
• Accidental physical loss or damage to the vessel's trailer from an external physical cause (an optional cover).
• Accidental physical loss or damage whilst ancillary gear and equipment is on board the vessel or whilst being removed from the vessel, together with certain cover whilst the gear and equipment is temporarily ashore (an optional cover).
• Legal liability incurred through the use of the vessel for:
  • Damage to another vessel from collision
  • Loss of life or bodily injury to other people
  • Loss or damage as a result of transportation on land
  • Removal of wreck
  • Damage to other property such as wharves, buoys, cables etc.
• Punitive or exemplary damages.
• Legal defence costs for representation at Maritime New Zealand, TAIC or Coroner inquiries.
• Legal liability for claims made as a result of an employee sustaining personal injury arising out of operation of the vessel.
• Defence costs for inadvertent breaches of New Zealand’s Resource Management, Maritime Transport or Health & Safety in Employment Acts.
• Legal Defence Costs for defending legal action taken against the Assured for any alleged offence under the Crimes Act 1961 or any other action against the Assured which we deem to be covered (an optional cover).
• Loss of Earnings, where the vessel is prevented from earning as a result of a risk covered under the Hull section of the policy (an optional cover).

• Personal watercraft/jetskis that are normally kept on board the vessel.
